Iceland is known for its breath-taking landscapes, natural wonders, and vibrant cultural scene. Beyond the popular tourist spots lies a hidden gem—the village of Hvammstangi in Northwest Iceland. During a week-long intensive course organized by ActinArt, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in Icelandic culture, meet incredible people, and broaden my knowledge of artistic practices in times of biggest challenges. However, what truly stood out was the profound sense of community.

Community Spirit

The people of Hvammstangi embraced us with open arms, making us feel like part of their close-knit community. From the Icelandic Seal Center to Gallerí Bardúsa and the Kidka wool factory, every encounter showcased their warmth and hospitality. We were given a first-hand glimpse into their lives and the deep connections they share.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

While lectures played a significant role, our exploration of local museums shed light on the region’s cultural heritage. Byggðasafn Húnvetninga & Strandamanna, Glaumbær’s Turf House Museum, and Textile Museum in Blönduós offered insights into the traditions and history that define rural Iceland. These experiences fostered an appreciation for the community’s dedication to preserving their heritage.

Nature’s Beauty

One cannot speak of Iceland without mentioning its natural wonders. Kolugljúfur Canyon, Hvítserkur, and the hot springs left a lasting impression. Surrounded by the beauty of nature, we connected with the land, experiencing a sense of peace and harmony.

Conclusion

The intensive course in Iceland went beyond academic pursuits, teaching me the significance of community in rural areas. Hvammstangi and its surroundings revealed a place where individuals come together, celebrating their heritage, and creating a vibrant community. This journey allowed me to witness first-hand the significance of human connection, the value of preserving traditions, and the inspiring beauty of nature. I will cherish the memories and the lessons learned from this exceptional community experience.
